Minister's Message Autumn 2011
Something to make you think!
It is very difficult to be an atheist. To be an atheist, you would need to know everything there is to know; to be sure there is no God.
No one knows everything. Therefore logically, no one can be an atheist!! Blaise Pascal the French mathematician and physicist said ‘Since we cannot know all that there is to be known about anything, we ought to know a little about everything.’
The great Einstein said ‘We still do not know one thousandth of 1% of what nature has revealed to us.’
Let me ask you a question. Is it easier to believe that God exists, or that he doesn’t exist? If it is ‘God does not exist’ then you will need knowledge and proof to back that up. If it is ‘God does exist’ – you will also need knowledge and faith to back it up.
It is much easier to believe that God exists than to believe He doesn’t exist. The easy way out, the foolish way out, is to say God does not exist because you cannot face up to accountability. Once you believe God exists if places responsibility on your life. The truth is, you cannot be an atheist, but you can be an agnostic – someone who says there may or may not be a God. By taking the agnostic road, you are saying ‘I don’t know.’
Isn’t it worth knowing!!?
Some people are atheistic in attitude. They believe in God, but live as though he doesn’t exist. That’s true of many people. God becomes ‘real’ in their life in times of emergency or crisis.
For the Christian it is not just knowledge and faith that makes them believe in God – it is also experience.
Christians are those who have lived out the truth of what God says in the Bible.
Jesus came to this earth to bring forgiveness and fullness of life. You experience that once you have taken the ‘leap of faith’.
The Bible says, ‘without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him'. Augustine cleverly states “Seek not to understand before you believe, but believe and you will understand”.
If you are able to distinguish between Christianity and Churchianity – then you give yourself a good chance of seeing beyond your doubts.
God invites you to taste and touch, experience the living proof, that He is the giver of life.
